Welcome Message

As you may know, this blog started life as a resource aimed at the members and Alumni of Birmingham University's Guild Musical Theatre Group.

Since then, I have realised that a great many artists I know could use a serious resource for discussion and debate of the major issues.

So, I open this network to any and all arts professionals who would like to use it. Over the years, I have seen some awe inspiring performances and productions by a great many talented and high ranking individuals, whose knowledge would be an asset to the artistic community. I invite these individuals and others to come forward, so that their achievements may be celebrated.

If you would like to write articles or make comments on this blog, please let me know. My contact email is on the link. Membership is free, and there are no obligations. Existing members are free to write as and when they want.

Its is also easy to forget, that we don't often have a chance to discuss or to think about the most serious issues affecting the arts. Despite all the progress made by online networks like Facebook and Twitter, there still needs to be a place where opinions can be viewed, and I hope that this will be such a place: a neutral ground, where all are welcome, and where knowledge can be shared.

Artists of all disciplines, I hope that this will assist your development and further networking. May this resource serve you well.

Best Regards,

James Megarry

Welcome Message

Welcome one and all, to a blog for GMTG!

This blog is for whenever you need to use it: whether you’re a current member or an Alumnus of GMTG Birmingham. You are welcome to contribute ideas of your own: on any aspect of performance or production. Likewise, if there are any connections, innovations, or projects you’d like information on, then here is a place to ask. As an Alumnus of the society myself, I have set up this blog to support GMTG's efforts.

The crucial role of this blog is to do two things: to recognise GMTG Birmingham’s professionalism, and, just as important, to provide a bridge between its academic and professional members.  We are often told that networking is important, so here is another network to be used. You will notice that this blog is not part of GMTG Birmingham, the society, nor is it a direct part of the Alumni network. It is a halfway house, where users from either side can meet to exchange knowledge and information.

Over the years, Birmingham University’s Guild Musical Theatre Group has gone from strength to strength. I see it now has a constitution, (something unprecedented during my time on the committee). It has a huge Facebook network, a Twitter link and a carefully developed website. What’s more, the standard of performance and production seem as high as ever. The society is more than ready for the next stage in its evolution.

Of course, we could simply merge all the society’s Facebook/Twitter pages together, for Alumni and members to network, but Facebook and Twitter, while excellent for social networking, were not designed for more formal discussions and business. Linkedin is very good for business, but is actually too formal, and lacks the artistic side to GMTG Birmingham’s operations. Therefore, I believe a blog for GMTG Birmingham and its Alumni, is the best solution.

I hope that this blog will become both an academic and a business resource to be used as and when needed. Users may go into as much detail as required, in their posts. Therefore, I invite all members, past and present, to use this blog at their convenience and wish them well. Whether you’re a current member or an Alumnus, there are some things we GMTGers all respect: high standards, attention to detail; and above all, a love of musical theatre performance and production, in all their glory.

Long may it continue!

Best Wishes,

James Mcgarry

Alumnus and Former Secretary of GMTG Birmingham
